Elias Zayyat

Elias Zayyat is a Syrian artist who was born in 1935, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia and the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, and majored in Art Restoration at the Academy of Fine Arts and Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest, Hungary. He is one of the founders of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, where he taught until his retirement. Painter and icon restorer, his art is influenced by religious and popular iconography. Many of Zayyat’s paintings are related to time where in a way or another, it makes a constant reappearance in the viewer’s mind; rich images approach the viewer’s mind when looking at a collection of paintings, waiting for other images in the time that follows.
