Rima Salamoun

Rima Salamoun was born in Damascus, Syria in 1963 and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University in 1987. She is a member of the Fine Arts Syndicate in Syria. Salamoun’s works have been featured in numerous exhibitions in the Arab world and Europe, such as the “Contemporary Syrian Art Exhibition” at the Waqif Art Center in Qatar, as well as a number of solo exhibitions inside and outside Syria, most notably the “Espace Europia” Gallery in France. In March 2010, Salamoun’s works were featured in a group exhibition of Syrian visual artists held at the UNESCO Palace in Beirut as part of the “World Book Capital” activities, where her creations were met with great acclaim from the Lebanese public. Salamoun’s paintings are deliberately tumultuous, and are characterized by the use of acrylic and various media techniques, depicting figures filled with sadness, consoling each other, and cloaked in a dark world. The female is often the heroine of Salmon’s works, as her creations belong to a strong trend in Syrian art that relies on the depiction of women as a powerful symbol of human suffering, where they are depicted with stylistic brilliance and clear skill. Salmon erases the identity of the characters in her works to tell stories with a universal flavour through which the viewer feels the weight of human concerns around the world.
